Bio/Statement
Regine Steenbock’s artistic career can essentially be divided into three phases, each with a different focus, but all linked by a strong interest in anthropological issues.
The first phase was characterized by an intensive engagement with documentary forms of experimental film. Her film Vel (1987) was screened at film festivals and institutions all over the world, including the International Short Film Festival Oberhausen, the Toronto Experimental Film Congress, Hallwalls Contemporary Art Center in New York, the Goethe-Institut Sydney, the Austrian Film Museum, and the Deutsches Filmmuseum Frankfurt.
From 1994 to 2015, she worked as a fashion designer, establishing her independent fashion brand Sium with its own shops in Hamburg and Berlin.
From 2016 to 2018, she served as a guest professor at Beijing Normal University in Zhuhai and began her long-term project “Chinese Weave” (2016–2023). This artistic research into the textile language of the Chinese Miao (Hmong) minority culminated in a photo book (2020) and a film of the same name (2023). Both have received numerous awards, including from the Stiftung Buchkunst and the Quetzalcoatl Indigenous International Film Festival in Guatemala. Since 2019, Steenbock has been an active member of the artist house FRISE in Hamburg, curating art programs and participating in international exhibitions and film screenings, most recently at the Higashikawa Cultural Exchange Center in Hokkaido, Japan.
