Baopu·FELT is a nonprofit art space based in Kaili, Guizhou, centered on artist residencies, research, exhibitions, and publishing. It is dedicated to fostering interdisciplinary artistic practices rooted in the folk cultures, intangible heritage, and local ecologies of Southwest China.

Bio/Statement
Xu Sanhuang graduated from the Department of Art Design at the Guangzhou Academy of Fine Arts in 2014 and currently lives and works in Guangzhou. His practice centers on paper and various natural materials, focusing on the behavioral changes of materials through processes of arrangement, support, resistance, and tension. He combines materiality with poetry, exploring the relationships between humans and nature, as well as between humans and objects. For him, material is both a language and a point of reflection, with particular emphasis on the potential and possibilities of the hand.

During her residency at FELT, Xu Sanhuang will continue her long-term exploration of “material language,” integrating it with the rich local culture of the Qiandongnan region in Guizhou—particularly the ancient papermaking techniques of Danzhai and the script system of the Shui people. Her creative work will revolve around two directions: “reading the material” and “translating the form.”

On one hand, the project will explore the field of papermaking, treating the entire process—from the selection of plants to the recombination of fibers—as a kind of “pre-linguistic” narrative. Through installation and bodily intervention, it will investigate the life of paper itself, prior to its role as a carrier of meaning. On the other hand, the work will focus on ancient scripts such as the Shui script (“Shuishu”), approaching them not for their semantics but for their forms as visual symbols. Xu Sanhuang aims to engage in dialogue with the visual structures and internal rhythms of these ancient scripts through local material practices, seeking new material possibilities for them within a contemporary context.

艺术家简介

许三煌，2014年毕业于广州美术学院。现生活工作于广州。

作品以纸和多种自然材料为核心媒介，关注材料在排列、支撑、对抗和受力过程中的行为变化。创作融合了材料性与诗意，探究人与自然、人与物之间的关系，认为材料即是语言，也是思考的起点，并强调“手”的潜能与可能性。

在抱朴FELT驻地期间，许三煌将延续其对“材料语言”的长期探索，并与贵州黔东南地区深厚的在地文化，尤其是丹寨的古法造纸工艺及水族的文字系统相结合。创作将围绕“阅读物质”与“转译形态”两个方向展开。一方面，创作将深入造纸的田野，将整个造纸过程——从植物的选择到纤维的重组——视为一种“前语言”的叙事，通过装置和身体介入，探索纸张在成为“载体”之前自身的生命形态。另一方面，创作将关注“水书”这类古文字。关注点不在于文字的语义，而在于其作为视觉符号的形态本身。许三煌计划通过在地的材料实践，与这些古老文字的视觉结构与内在韵律展开一场对话，为它们在当代语境中寻找新的物质可能性。
